(Riverton) — Fremont County officials say 250th Street has reopened for travel near Riverton.

The Fremont County Emergency Management Agency says flood waters have receded and 250th Street, or Riverton Road, between 300th Avenue and Riverton city limits has reopened to travel. Officials say secondary roads crews were en route to remove the barricades as of Saturday afternoon.

Flooding along the West Nishnabotna River had prompted crews to close the stretch of road Friday morning.

(Riverton) — Fremont County motorists are advised of a road closure due to floodwater over the roadway.

Fremont County Engineer Dan Davis tells KMA News that J46, or 250th Street, just west of Riverton has been closed. Fremont County is among those under a flood warning issued by the National Weather Service along the West Nishnabotna River through tonight. After multiple rounds of heavy rainfall throughout the region, Davis says floodwaters have begun to cover the stretch of road.

“The water has finally backed up from the West Nishnabotna into the ditches and whatever else it finds until they get full and it starts creeping out onto the roadway,” said Davis. “The water has started going over the outside edges of the lane. So, we’re going to have to shut down the roadway at least for now.”

Davis says motorists going around the closure will need to utilize L68 on the east end of Riverton, while 300th Avenue is the last road available on the west side of the closure. Davis says the duration of the closure is unknown until the river has crested at Riverton.

“We’ll have to wait for the water to get back down,” said Davis. “Then, we’ll have to make sure we don’t have a whole bunch of mud or goo on there, so we’ll have to get all that cleaned off.”

Davis added they will have signs posted at the intersections with Highway 2/275 and U.S. Highway 59. Outside of 250th Street, Davis says they have avoided any widespread flooding impacting roadways.

“We honestly haven’t had too much,” said Davis. “We were a little lucky that the East (Nishnabotna River) was a little bit lower than the West (Nishnabotna River) this time as far as the upstream water coming down.”

More information on the closure and a potential re-opening will be provided as it becomes available.
