FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State football team posted a 28-0 shutout victory over Wyoming on Saturday afternoon for the annual Homecoming game. NDSU improved to 5-0 on the season and 2-0 in Mountain West Conference play.
The game was the inaugural “Battle of the Basins” sponsored by the North Dakota Petroleum Council, with the Bison capturing the new traveling trophy revealed earlier this week.
NDSU linebacker Donovan Woolen intercepted a Wyoming pass on the first play from scrimmage, and the Bison defense did not relent for the remainder of the game. NDSU limited Wyoming to just eight first downs and 162 yards of total offense in the contest.
Bison quarterback Nathan Hayes scored two rushing touchdowns – one in each of the first two quarters – to give NDSU a 14-0 lead over the Cowboys. Drew Klein added a 31-yard field goal with 20 seconds left before halftime to put the Bison up 17-0 at the break.
Klein connected for a 37-yard field goal with 8:20 left in the third quarter, and DJ Scott scored on a one-yard run in the fourth quarter to set the final margin at 28-0.
It was the first Mountain West home game of NDSU’s Division I FBS era.
Woolen finished with nine tackles and a sack to go along with his interception, spearheading the NDSU defense. Gavin Sell added eight stops, and Darius Givance had seven. Kelton McCaslin finished with 1.5 sacks.
Hayes rushed for 79 yards on 10 carries and threw for 187 yards. Jackson Williams led the Bison receiving corps with four catches for 75 yards.
NDSU racked up 407 yards of offense and 23 first downs.
It was the second straight home shutout by the Bison defense. Through three home games this season, NDSU has allowed only seven points.
The Bison will make their first trip to UNLV next Saturday, Oct. 10, for a Mountain West showdown at 6 p.m. CT.
