Magna’s Graz plant is becoming Xpeng’s European base, giving the supplier’s contract manufacturing model new relevance as volumes shift
The Xpeng G9L SUV has passed a trial production run at Magna’s Graz plant in Austria, joining the G6, G9 and P7+ as the Chinese automaker’s fourth European-built model. A pre-production car will now drive 1,324 km to Paris, where orders open at the Paris Motor Show premiere on 12 October.
Assembly in Graz started during the third quarter of 2025, Xpeng’s first European manufacturing programme. Adding a fourth model within a year shows the partnership widening as European volumes grow.
Overseas, Xpeng has handed over more than 100,000 vehicles, over 60,000 of them in Europe, and quarterly overseas deliveries first passed 20,000 between April and June 2026, up 81% year on year. Those markets generated 25% of first-half revenue with an average selling price above €40,000 (US$44,800).
Planned for 64 countries and regions, the G9L has logged 6.74 million km of testing in 26 markets over three years, including 192 crash tests. Its standard chassis pairs dual-chamber air suspension and variable damping with rear-wheel steering that turns up to 15 degrees.
In a statement, Zhang Li, Vice President of Global Manufacturing at Xpeng, said: “The latest production milestone represents an important step in our journey from entering Europe to building for Europe. By combining global vehicle development and AI technology with established local manufacturing expertise, we are bringing the next-gen Xpeng vehicles closer to customers in Europe and around the world.”
