A 7-year-old girl died after being stabbed in the Chatham neighborhood Saturday, police said.
Edi Mari Hernandez Chacon was walking outside in the 8600 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue just before noon when a woman approached her and stabbed her multiple times in the back, according to Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Bystanders who witnessed the stabbing intervened and detained the woman, police said.
The girl was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The woman, who has not been identified, suffered injuries during the scuffle with bystanders, and she was transported to the hospital before being taken into police custody.
Detectives are investigating.
