In Kerala, India’s Kozhikode district, a surprise wild boar attack jolted a man reading his morning paper.
The Hindu reported that the attack followed another boar-related episode in the same district that left two people injured after a motorcycle crashed on a local road.
Here’s what to know
Thamarassery Taluk Hospital treated 59-year-old M.K. Abdul Khader after a wild boar attacked him and injured his leg on his home’s veranda around 6 a.m. on Sept. 16, according to The Hindu.
The rest of the family fortunately avoided injury.
The previous incident happened on Sept. 7 and involved a motorcycle crash after a wild boar suddenly crossed the Thiruvambady-Omassery road near Neeleswaram, Kerala.
The injured people were Pallath Faisal, 37, and his 32-year-old wife, Aleefathima. Both were admitted to a private medical college facility in Manassery, Kerala.
More background
The Hindu stated that wild boars have been showing up more often in residential parts of Kozhikode district.
Wild boars can cause serious injuries through direct attacks or traffic accidents. While it always helps to act with caution, the World Wildlife Federation has detailed many ways to prevent harmful human-wildlife interactions.
What’s being done?
The Hindu reported that people in the Thamarassery and Mukkam areas said local administrators have been trying to reduce the growing number of wild boars, but progress has been slow.
They said the shortage of licensed shooters has been hindering the process.
