Once admired globally, American railroads powered the country’s industrial era, yet that distinction faded over fifty years ago. Brightlineestablished in 2012, aimed to reverse this trend. This private Florida operator ran yellow trains at near high speed linking Miami and Orlando, and it envisioned a new route featuring genuine 200 mph service covering 200 miles between Las Vegas and Rancho Cucamonga, California, near Los Angeles.
However, insufficient revenue to service its obligations led the company to seek bankruptcy protection last month. The Florida operations continue, and the Las Vegas to Southern California true high speed project remains in motion.
Globally, high speed passenger rail is widespread, spanning major nations such as Japan, France and China as well as emerging economies like Morocco. The United States stands out as an exception, lacking any passenger trains that satisfy the international high speed standard of at least 150 mph over long distances.
Part of this stems from culture, since America is car-centric. Yet the primary factor preventing high speed rail in the United States is insufficient government funding, according to prominent high speed rail proponent Lou Thompson.
Thompson, who participated in creating Amtrak during the early 1970s and advised the World Bank on railways, told CNN that foreign governments desired high speed rail and funded it, whereas the U.S. government has never fulfilled both of those requirements.
Instead, government backing flowed to interstate highways and the air traffic network. Public necessity played a role, as postwar America required dependable movement of people and goods across a rapidly expanding nation.
Yet powerful commercial interests also mattered: automakers, oil companies and construction firms for highways, plus airlines and aerospace manufacturers for aviation.
Lobbying by these sectors largely relegated high-speed rail to the sidelines so that roads and aviation kept their funding, according to Andy Kunz, chief executive of the advocacy organization US High Speed Rail.
Geography poses another challenge. The United States is vast, and its principal cities sit farther apart than in many nations with established high speed rail.
Thompson noted that beyond roughly 400 miles between endpoints, high speed rail starts losing to air travel, since flying becomes quicker within the United States. He marveled at how far 400 miles reaches in Europe, where most major cities fall within such a span, a situation that also applies to Japan.
