CARY, N.C. (WTVD) — UNC Health has officially broken ground on a new 48-acre health campus near the Cary-Durham line, a project that leaders say will expand access to medical care in one of the Triangle’s fastest-growing areas.

Health system leaders, local officials from Cary and Durham, and community members gathered for the groundbreaking ceremony, marking the start of a project that will be built in two phases.

The first phase includes a six-story, 192,000-square-foot medical office building and a 900-space parking deck.

Both are expected to open in summer 2028. The medical office building will offer cancer care, heart and vascular services, orthopedics, OB-GYN services, imaging, laboratory services and a pharmacy.

During the ceremony, speakers highlighted the importance of bringing care closer to where people live.

Among them was a cancer survivor who described the challenges of traveling for treatment. She said she drove roughly 45 minutes to an hour each day to Chapel Hill during her cancer treatment and believes the new campus will make it easier for patients in communities across the region to access care.

“Not everyone has a remote job, which I did at the time, that lets them spend 80 minutes a day round trip on the road to get their care. Not everyone has the gas money. For patients in Durham, Cary, Apex, Morrisville, anywhere from 15 to 25 minutes to Chapel Hill becomes treatment close to home.

No one should have to choose between the care that they need and the time, or the money it takes to get there,” she said. UNC Health also plans to build a community hospital on the campus.

The hospital is expected to open in 2032. Once completed, the campus is expected to employ about 1,000 people.
