President Donald Trump is repeating a call for federal intervention in Chicago over what he’s calling “an unprecedented and particularly violent crime wave that is getting worse by the day.”
“The Federal Government can extinguish it quickly and completely, but the Mayor of Chicago, or the Governor of Illinois, must ask for our help,” he posted on Truth Social. “What is wrong with them? Why aren’t they asking? TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!”
Trump made a similar plea last month, saying “the city will die if the Federal Government, a fine tuned crime fighting machine, is not invited in by the Mayor or Governor, to HELP.”
The mayor and governor have dismissed his offers, with Gov. JB Pritzker (D) calling it a veiled, and dangerous, power grab, particularly before the November elections.
While crime is routinely an issue in the city, which has one of the most populated counties in the country, the number of homicides has dropped in recent years, according to the Chicago Tribune.
