Based on Expedia Group’s findings, travelers are veering slightly off the beaten path, opting for domestic and international destinations with fewer crowds that offer dramatic scenery, nostalgic activities that bring out the inner child, unforgettable food, rich culture, and plenty of opportunities to explore hobbies and passions.
To feel one with nature in the new year, consider a trip to South Lake Tahoe, one of the best places to visit in California. For a spiritual adventure, hop on a plane to Sedona, Arizona (and be sure to read up on how to have a perfect weekend among the red-rock vistas). Sticking to North America, head up to Niagara-on-the-Lake—one of the most beautiful places in Canada—to stroll down storybook streets, explore varietals among the scenic vineyards, and unwind on the water. More of a beach lover? Holbox, Mexico, beckons with soft white sands, bioluminescent waters, and an easy island vibe off the Yucatan Peninsula coast.
Of course, you could also go further south—either to Punta del Este, Uruguay, in South America, or Down Under to The Tweed; both destinations are brimming with coastal charm, though Punta del Este is more glamorous, while The Tweed is more relaxed. If a vacation in Asia is on your radar for 2027, you have options. Busan, South Korea, is ideal for folks looking for big-city energy and close proximity to one of the world’s best art cities (Seoul is just over two hours away). For a more restorative journey, head to Hyogo, Japan (a stone’s throw from Kyoto’s ancient gardens), where centuries-old heritage and healing hot springs await.
While the European vacation craze has died down a bit since the early 2020s, Italy and the U.K. make a case for revisiting the popular countries. Instead of (or in addition to) Rome, Florence, or the Amalfi Coast, check out Perugia for scrumptious authentic Italian cuisine, medieval architecture, and an abundance of art galleries. Alternatively, get your history fix with a side of scenic countryside in Chichester.
As much as you may love your favorite town, city, or country, let this be a reminder to think outside the box when booking your 2027 vacation. And remember, you can always keep it short. Trip snacking—one- to two-day getaways—is expected to surge in the new year.
