Washington, Oct 13 (EFE).- The United States Government announced this Tuesday that it has called the Charge d’Affaires of its embassy in Nicaragua, Elias Baumann, for consultations in Washington, after the country’s president, Daniel Ortega, denied the credentials of Natasha Franceschi as the US ambassador to the Central American country.
In a statement, the State Department said that the decision, which it attributes to Ortega and his wife, co-president Rosario Murillo, demonstrates their “total lack of will to engage in productive diplomatic dialogue.”
The measure was taken at the direction of the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, after the rejection of Franceschi, “a high-level and highly qualified career diplomat,” whose denial “reveals the hypocrisy of her rhetoric of mutual respect and her eagerness to put on a political spectacle at the expense of the Nicaraguan people,” the note indicated.
On September 30, the US Senate ratified Franceschi as the new ambassador to Nicaragua, where the United States has not had an ambassador since 2023.
The Nicaraguan refusal against Franceschi was revealed by the Undersecretary of the State Department, Chistopher Landau, during an extraordinary meeting of foreign ministers of the Organization of American States (OAS) held in Washington, on October 2.
This organization then approved a resolution that demanded Nicaragua hold elections and the unconditional release of political prisoners, after the Nicaraguan president announced that there would be no more elections in the country.
The text, approved unanimously, also called for recovering the separation of powers, disclosing the whereabouts of the disappeared and returning nationality to people who were stripped of it, but did not include the imposition of specific sanctions for Ortega and Murillo.
The Secretary General of the OAS, Albert Ramdin, stated that it is “urgent” for the nation to recover constitutional order and asked member states to act using tools such as economic sanctions that do not affect the population, as well as financial and travel restrictions for certain authorities.
