Hundreds of science journalists, authors, editors and communicators will gather in Tucson next fall when the University of Arizona hosts ScienceWriters2027. The annual conference attracts 600 to 800 people from North America and beyond.
The conference will introduce attendees to Tucson as a center of scientific activity and how the U of A helps drive it.
“Tucson’s clear desert air and commitment to dark skies began a regional telescope boom decades ago that has since transformed into current leadership in NASA space missions and space research,” according to a welcome message posted on the event’s website.
The event also gives the university an opportunity to highlight its research and innovation in areas including space sciences, water resources, optical sciences and age-related diseases.
“ScienceWriters2027 will be a fantastic opportunity to showcase our research and faculty to high-profile journalists from many of the world’s largest news organizations,” said Johnny Cruz, the university’s chief communications and marketing officer. “Bringing them to Tucson gives us a chance to connect them directly with the people, places, ideas and discoveries coming out of the University of Arizona.”
Seeing the science up close
Attendees will get a firsthand look at U of A science, from the ecosystems of Biosphere 2 and climate research at Tumamoc Hill to astronomy at Flandrau Science Center and Planetarium and giant telescope mirrors taking shape at the Richard F. Caris Mirror Laboratory.
The conference is organized by the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing and the National Association of Science Writers, two organizations dedicated to science journalism and communication. University Marketing and Communications led the U of A’s successful proposal to host the 2027 conference.
More details about conference dates, programming and opportunities to collaborate will be announced as planning continues.
