How did that happen? Bill and Ted realized that they could solve any problem by going back in time after the event to fix it, which means that their future selves were also in the scene, waiting to drop the trash can and allow their past selves to go to the future and drop the trash can and… Obviously, it’s confusing. But that’s the genius of Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventurewritten by Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon and directed by Stephen Herek. The plot can cook your brain and we’ll accept it, because we’re already following a couple of brain-dead (complimentary) metal-heads.

3. Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie (2025)

As highlighted by the titular group’s name, Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie constantly forces viewers to ask, “How did they do this?” From the original web shorts that Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol made together, through the 16-episode TV series that ran on Viceland, up to last year’s feature film, Johnson and McCarrol common sense and copyright laws to create incredible comedy that blends real-life with absurd fiction.

Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie continues the tradition. When Matt puts a flux capacitor in their camper, and when Bird accidentally uses it to go back to 2008, they use the outrageous situation to finally realize their dream: playing the Rivoli, a mid-size club in Toronto. As always, that meager ambition leads to outrageous bits, including direct riffs on Back to the Futureand mixtures of real world reactions with planned stunts, some of which are achieved by incorporating unused footage from web shorts form 2008. More than the audacious filmmaking, the pleasure of NTBTSTM comes from its emotional heart. At the end of the day, the movie’s just about two guys who love each other, and who want to play the Rivoli.

2. The Terminator (1984)

James Cameron fans will spend the rest of their lives debating the merits of The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Daywith some praising the first movie’s lean horror vibe, while others extolling the spectacular virtues of the blockbuster follow-up. But on a list of time-travel movies, the original terminates every sequel.

Inspired by a fever dream about a metallic man pulling himself from an explosion, The Terminator stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as the T-800, an android sent from the future to kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton), the woman whose son John will lead the human resistance against machines. To protect Sarah, those humans send back Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn), a loyal soldier who eventually becomes a greater part of John Connor’s story. Cameron’s film directly addresses questions about fate and free will, but never at the expense of the action, making The Terminator one of the most purely entertaining time-travel movies.

1. Back to the Future (1985)

Back to the Future isn’t the first time-travel movie, but it is the most important. At least half of the films on this list pay homage to it, either by direct reference, or by just building on that movie’s structure. The movie does lots of things right: Robert Zemeckiss fantastic work with special effects, the memorable lead performances by Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloydand especially that awesome Delorian time machine.
