Low roster numbers have plagued the Springdale football team this season, and with that, the program decided to forfeit this week’s scheduled Eastern Conference game with Clairton.
The Allegheny Valley School District announced the forfeit, and the reason for it, in a message on its website Wednesday afternoon. Springdale coach Chad Walsh could not immediately be reached for comment on the decision.
There were 21 players on Springdale’s season-opening roster.
“Due to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control, this Friday’s game between the Clairton Bears and the Springdale Dynamos has been canceled due to a forfeit resulting from Springdale’s low roster numbers,” a statement on the Clairton Bears football X page said.
“We appreciate the communication from the Springdale Dynamos.”
Clairton had scheduled homecoming activities for this weekend. They have been moved to Oct. 29-30 in connection with the Bears’ home rivalry game with Jeannette. Clairton also will celebrate senior night against the Jayhawks.
Springdale won its season opener at Summit Academy, 14-6. The Dynamos were riding a four-game losing streak since then and were coming off a 36-0 loss to Sto-Rox last Friday.
Clairton itself forfeited a game earlier this season, bowing out of a Week 2 nonconference clash with Steel Valley over what it said were “personnel matters” following a Week Zero loss to District 10 power Farrell and the subsequent suspension of coach Wayne Wade.
The Bears returned to the field the next week and have since won four in a row including a 45-0 rout of Riverview last Saturday at Riverside Park in Oakmont.
