South Africa has been named among the world’s best countries for food in 2026, emerging as the only African country to feature on the list and putting its diverse culinary scene in the global spotlight.

The country scored 94.26% in the Time Out’s 2026 Readers’ Choice Awards, which asked thousands of readers to rate their favourite destinations. Italy claimed the top spot with a score of 96.92%, recognised for its rich regional food traditions, from Naples’ pizza and Sicily’s cannoli to Milan’s risotto.

South Africa’s inclusion highlights the growing international appeal of its food culture, shaped by indigenous traditions, European influences, and the culinary heritage of communities across the country.

South African cuisine draws on several cultural influences, creating a food scene that stretches from traditional home cooking to contemporary restaurants and internationally recognised dining experiences.

Cape Malay cuisine, particularly in Cape Town, is known for its aromatic curries, spices and dishes such as bobotie, a baked minced-meat dish often topped with an egg-based custard. Meanwhile, the country’s braai culture remains a central part of social life, bringing people together over grilled meat, boerewors and other local favourites.

Coastal destinations offer fresh seafood, while cities such as Cape Town and Johannesburg have developed restaurant scenes that combine local ingredients with international techniques.

The country’s wine-producing regions also add to its culinary appeal, attracting visitors interested in food and wine experiences.

Italy secured first place with a score of 96.92%, reflecting the international popularity of its regional specialities and long-established culinary traditions.

Its food culture extends well beyond familiar dishes such as pizza and pasta. Visitors can explore seafood along the coast, risotto in northern Italy, pastries in Sicily and a wide range of regional dishes that vary from one part of the country to another.
