International Law at the Heart of Global Recognition. The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize goes to an African figure renowned for her work in justice and human rights: South African jurist Navanethem, known as Navi Pillay. At the age of 85, this former United Nations official is being honored for her commitment to peace and the prosecution of the most serious crimes. The distinction was announced on Friday, October 9, in Oslo, Norway.

This award puts international justice back at the center of the global debate. The Norwegian Nobel Committee is honoring Navi Pillay for her commitment to peace, human rights, and international law. Her work has helped strengthen the fight against impunity, particularly in cases of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. This award comes at a time when the international landscape is marked by ongoing armed conflicts and debates over compliance with international law. For the 2026 award, 287 nominations were received, including 79 organizations.

“The Nobel Peace Prize for 2026 springs directly from Alfred Nobel’s will. Navi Pillay strengthens fraternity between nations, and by systematically advancing the use of tribunals for peace and justice, she provides substance, direction, and motivation for peace conferences in their modern form.”

Jørgen Watne Frydnes, Chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee – Norway

Born in South Africa in 1941, Navi Pillay first made a name for herself defending anti-apartheid activists. In 1995, she became the first Black woman to serve on the South African High Court. She then continued her career at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, which she presided over from 1999 to 2003, before serving as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014. Her career is notably marked by her contribution to the recognition of sexual violence as a weapon of war and to the fight against impunity.

“Well, firstly, thanks to those very brave witnesses who provided the testimony, there was nothing in it for them except to take the trouble to come and tell the court what they saw and heard. And then secondly, we had to overcome the obstacle that there was no commonly accepted definition of rape and sexual violence in international law. So what do you do as judges? We’re very used to all the precedents. People have done this before. And so anything new is obviously a greater responsibility.”

This award comes against a backdrop of tensions surrounding international justice. Navi Pillay chaired a UN commission of inquiry which concluded that genocide had taken place in Gaza allegations rejected by Israel. The award ceremony is scheduled for 10 December 2026 in Oslo.
