About one in 10 women suffer from the condition, but diagnosis can be a lengthy process.

Chloe said it took seven years for her to be diagnosed.

She said being self-employed in the beauty industry meant she had flexibility, but no financial safety net.

“If I’m not there to do the treatments, nobody pays me,” she said.

She told BBC Radio Manchester she had lost clients over the years because flare-ups could leave her unable to work at short notice.

Chloe is now waiting for a hysterectomy, which will mean more time away from work.

“There’s so much to it that people don’t understand,” she said.

The financial impact has extended beyond lost earnings.

After receiving a stage-four endometriosis diagnosis in 2023, she paid about £6,000 for private surgery because NHS waiting times were too long.

She and her partner also spent about £8,000 on a third round of IVF after two NHS-funded attempts failed.

The report found 39% of women with endometriosis had experienced financial hardship because of the condition, while 40% said they had turned down career opportunities due to a lack of workplace support.
