Rick Crosslin, a lifelong STEM educator and scientist in residence for the Wayne Township School System, says he became especially involved in science education in central Indiana after seeing how much interest there was among both students and teachers throughout his career. He says Celebrate Science Indiana is a family-oriented event designed to bring science out of the classroom and into the community. The event will feature roughly 50 to 60 exhibitors showcasing different areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Admission is free, aside from parking, and the event is designed for children, families, educators and adults who simply have an interest in science.

Crosslin believes science education needs to be hands-on. He believes just reading about science or watching demonstrations on a screen doesn’t have the same impact as allowing students to experiment, make mistakes and discover how things work for themselves. His demonstrations, including experiments with static electricity and a Van de Graaff generator, illustrate how everyday phenomena can become opportunities to spark curiosity. “Have a questioning mind about the world around you, and you’ll have a richer life.”

Crosslin connects science education directly to the economy and Indiana’s business community. He points to companies such as Lilly and Corteva as examples of businesses that have historically supported science education and argues that students should understand the connection between scientific discoveries, industry and the products they encounter every day. “Science helps humanity.” He says Celebrate Science gives companies an opportunity to explain their work and show the public how science and innovation contribute to bringing products and ideas to market.
