Putin has already broken Trump’s ‘energy ceasefire’ with attack on power plant, says Zelenskyy | World News

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of striking a Ukrainian power plant and energy facilities after Donald Trump claimed an “energy ceasefire” was in place. Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of striking a Ukrainian power plant and energy facilities after Donald Trump claimed an “energy ceasefire” was in place.

The US president said on Sunday afternoon that both Russia and Ukraine had “agreed” to a ceasefire, writing on Truth Social: “Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed.

“Do not break it!” he added. “Thank you for your attention to this matter.”

While Moscow is yet to comment, Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy told US publication Axios that the agreement was “news to me”, before later adding that he was still “awaiting details from the American side”.

“Ukraine supports the ceasefire, and it is important that Russia support it as well,” he wrote on X. “We are awaiting details from the American side.

“For our part, Ukraine always FULLY supports steps toward de-escalation, the protection of lives, and the decisions needed to end the war and guarantee lasting peace.”

‘There were attacks on our energy infrastructure’

In another post, Mr Zelenskyy later claimed Russia had launched strikes on energy facilities in the Kharkiv region after Mr Trump‘s announcement.

He made the accusation as he shared details of a call with EU President Ursula von der Leyen.

“Just before our conversation, the Russians struck a power plant in Kyiv with a ‘shahed’ drone, and many districts experienced power outages,” Ukraine’s president wrote.

“Later, there were strikes on energy facilities in the Kharkiv region. And all of this happened AFTER the President of the United States made his statement about an energy ceasefire.”

Mr Trump, whose war in Iran has been widely blamed for hiking global fuel prices, previously announced an energy ceasefire in Ukraine in mid-September. However, neither side ever confirmed an agreement had been reached.

Prior to that, an energy ceasefire was agreed in March 2025 – but this was broken by Russia.

Moscow has sought to deny Ukrainian civilians power, heat and running water during the war, hoping to wear down public resistance to its invasion.

Kyiv has also targeted key Russian infrastructure, with a drone attack on Sunday (11 October) shutting down a data centre run by technology giant Yandex.

Leaders back ceasefire

Ukraine’s allies, including the UK, have backed Mr Trump’s call for a ceasefire.

In a post on X, Andy Burnham said he discussed the matter with Mr Zelenskyy on Saturday.

“The UK strongly supports President Trump’s call today for a sustained energy ceasefire to start now.

“I discussed this with [Zelenskyy] yesterday: Ukraine is ready if Russia stops its attacks. This is the best route to get energy and fuel back into world markets.”

Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney shared his support for an agreement after speaking separately with Mr Trump and Mr Zelenskyy.

It comes as strikes from both sides have continued. Officials in Ukraine said on Sunday that Russian attacks on two cities had killed six people, with 20 more injured.

Earlier, Russian officials said one man was killed and two women wounded in a Ukrainian drone strike on the Bryansk border region.
