President Lee Jae Myung said on the 21st, “As our criminal justice system, which has been in place for more than 70 years, has been completely reorganized, the police’s responsibility has become greater than ever,” adding, “We need to take a cold look at what was lacking and reform to boldly correct wrong practices and systems.”

President Lee attended the 81st anniversary of the National Police Day ceremony and said, “I am well aware of your hard work in fulfilling your duties sincerely,” but added, “Nevertheless, we should be wary of the fact that a small number of deviations and insufficient responses can undermine the trust and reputation of the entire organization.”

In particular, “We should take seriously the reality that trust in the police has been shaken and public anxiety has increased due to recent relationship crimes and abnormal motives targeting an unspecified number of people,” he said. We should make efforts to cut bones so that the people can feel the change,” he stressed.

It also directly suggested specific directions for reform.

“We hope that you will establish democratic control and accountability worthy of your growing investigative authority,” President Lee said. “Undue interference from outside should be prevented, but the process and outcome of the investigation should be strictly checked. Please strengthen the practical role of the National Police Commission and have a mechanism to independently check police investigations,” he said.

He then said, “Protecting crime victims should be firmly established as an important principle of police investigation and the voices of the ‘safe underprivileged’ who are vulnerable to crime, such as women, the disabled, and children, should not be left out. We should fulfill our promises to the people by establishing a subcommittee for the socially underprivileged within the investigation review committee.”

Furthermore, he stressed, “We need to work closely with related agencies such as the Public Prosecutors’ Office and the Central Investigation Office to take necessary measures to prevent gaps or damage to the public due to the lack of supplementary investigation rights.”

President Lee said, “We need to boldly correct wrong practices and systems as well. When the fault is revealed, we need to admit it and improve it honestly, he said. “Don’t avoid or turn away from criticism from the public, but when we fill in and correct the shortcomings right away, we will also strengthen our faith in the police.”

“I’m shaken by the police, and I have to try to cut my bones…Need an independent investigation inspection system”
” Close cooperation with the Public Prosecutors’ Office and the Central District Prosecutors’ Office to prevent damage without the right to supplementary investigation”
” Follow-up responses such as stalking and non-discriminatory crimes → Pre-preventive change…”Return to the End of Illegal Profits”

Proposals related to the response to the investigation at the scene were also followed.

President Lee said, “Please focus on protecting the peaceful daily life of the people. Relational crimes such as stalking or indiscriminate crimes against an unspecified number of people should be converted from post-response to precautionary prevention, he said.

He also said, “We should not miss the golden time for missing cases and respond quickly by working closely with related agencies at the disaster site,” adding, “Carefulness that does not miss even a small sign and a step ahead can prevent further damage.”

In addition, President Lee said, “The police should take the lead in correcting violations and privileges and creating a fair society. We should not avoid the law just because we have power or be treated unfairly because we are weak, he said. “We should firmly respond to crimes that take away the property and legitimate opportunities of the people, and not be swayed by external pressure or interests.”

“Crimes that destroy the trust of the community, such as charter fraud, investment fraud, and illegal supply and demand of state subsidies, should be strictly investigated,” he said. “The principle that the people are equal before the law should be proved by fair law enforcement, not words. We must firmly establish the principle that we cannot benefit from crime and recover illegal profits to the end,” he said.

In addition, President Lee added that efforts should be made to expand investigative capabilities using cutting-edge technologies, such as the establishment of an “AI-based next-generation 112 system.”

There were also words of encouragement to the police.

President Lee said, “I would like to express my gratitude to the police officers who have worked day and night for the safe daily lives of the people and to the family who carried the weight of their dedication,” and promised, “I will never forget the noble sacrifice of the fallen and killed police officers who sacrificed their lives to protect the safety of the people.”

He said, “With today as an opportunity, I ask you to renew your commitment and be reborn as a police officer of the people. As a uniformed citizen, please do your best to become a democratic police officer protecting the people, he said. “The government will also actively support the police officers’ dedication to shine more.”
