Bishops across the Americas joined in prayer for Pope Leo XIV on Sunday.
Argentinaʼs bishops asked the Lord “to grant him strength and peace at this time, that the operation may go well, and that he may make a swift and full recovery.” In Uruguay, which the pope is due to visit next month, Cardinal Daniel Sturla of Montevideo said: “Let us pray for his speedy recovery and continue with greater spirit the preparation for his visit to our land.”
The Canadian bishops sought “the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Health of the Sick, asking for a prompt recovery for the Holy Father following his upcoming surgery.”
In the U.S., Cardinal Robert McElroy of Washington, D.C., asked “every priest of the Archdiocese to offer Mass for Pope Leo and his health in these days.”
Archbishop Ronald Hicks of New York said he joins “all people of good will of the Archdiocese of New York in praying for our Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, as he prepares for his surgery later this week.”
Bishop Robert Barron of Winona-Rochester, founder of Word on Fire, asked the faithful to pray for Pope Leo XIV ahead of his surgery.
“Friends, please join me in praying for our Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, as he undergoes surgery this week,” Barron said on X. “I pray for his comfort, for those who will care for him, and for a swift and full recovery.” Addressing the pope directly, he added: “know that we are praying for you, and that you are close to our hearts this week.”
