The Piner Junior Senior High School football team forfeited its game on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 10, at Archie Williamsciting a lack of healthy players.
Both head coach Adam Rosenstein and athletic director Ryan Riddle confirmed the forfeit, which wasn’t finalized until Friday evening, according to an email from Archie Williams athletic director Jett Russell.
“This year has been challenging with numbers, so we’re hopeful to be back next week,” Riddle said in a text to The Press Democrat on Saturday morning. Piner’s JV game at the Marin County school went on as scheduled.
Rosenstein also told The Press Democrat on Saturday afternoon that Piner’s main roster issue stemmed from a lack of healthy linemen. While their roster on MaxPreps lists 33 players on varsity, Rosenstein said they only had five healthy linemen for Saturday’s game.
The cancellation comes one day after more than 200 Piner students walked out of class and marched 2.5 miles to Santa Rosa City Schools district offices to protest what they viewed as a lack of accountability after a football team captain posted “Free the Cornell 7” on Instagram, an apparent reference to men accused of sexually assaulting a Cornell University student.
During Friday afternoon’s walkout, students called for consequences for the player and greater support from school administrators for those speaking out against sexual violence.
The loss drops Piner to 2-4 on the season and 0-2 in REC-Mountain play.
