President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met at the White House on September 24 amid uncertainty across the Indo-Pacific. Leader-level diplomacy will continue at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen, China, in November and the Miami Group of 20 summit in December. Yet Washington needs to balance these negotiations with the need to maintain deterrence across the region.
Outcompeting China in artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, and critical supply chains will require close, integrated cooperation with American allies, including Japan and the Republic of Korea. Cooperation is essential to maintain America’s lead in advanced technology, turn AI innovation into economic gains at home and abroad, rebuild defense industrial capacity, and reduce Chinese leverage over global economic chokepoints.
Join Senator Dave McCormick (R-PA), who recently visited Japan and Korea, and Distinguished Fellow Mike Gallagher for a fireside discussion on United States–China relations, the role of allies and partners in America’s Indo-Pacific strategy, and how the US can harness technology, industrial capacity, and allied strength to prevail in the defining strategic competition of our time.
