Nicolas Cage Reveals New Role in Hit HBO Crime Drama True Detective

Nicolas Cage broke the news on Saturday that he’ll be starring in the next season of HBO’s anthology crime series True Detective. “You can only do so many movies back to back to back, and necessity is the mother of invention,” Cage told the crowd at the New York Comic Con “Spotlight” panel, as reported

Nicolas Cage broke the news on Saturday that he’ll be starring in the next season of HBO’s anthology crime series True Detective.

“You can only do so many movies back to back to back, and necessity is the mother of invention,” Cage told the crowd at the New York Comic Con “Spotlight” panel, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.

Cage continued, “You can connect those dots, too. What do I mean by necessity? Feed the family; don’t do too many movies… So I think I’m probably gonna do another season of television. I think I might do a season of True Detective.”

“That’s okay that I’m the first to announce that, right?” Cage added.

Cage makes for an exciting pick for the series, which is famous for giving prestige roles to actors not necessarily known for their serious acting chops. The show’s first season in 2014 gave Matthew McConaughey, best known at the time for his romantic comedy films, the chance to redefine himself and play the intense, haunted Detective Rust Cohle.

Season 2 pulled a similar move by casting comedic actor Vince Vaughn as a hardcore gangster and rom-com star Rachel McAdams as a dark-edged detective. Season 3 and 4 largely stuck to actors already known for their dramatic performances, however; Cage, with his eccentric roles, feels like a slight return in approach to True Detective‘s early days.

While HBO itself has not officially confirmed Cage will star in True Detective season 5, Cage’s past interviews have indicated that he’s been in talks for the role for over a year now.

“I like [new showrunner] Issa López a lot, and would be thrilled to work with her, but nothing is concrete,” Cage told Variety in August 2025. “And I’ve never seen the first season of True Detective, but I’ve heard great things.”

Season 5 will be run by season 4’s showrunner Issa López, and is once again set to take place in a completely new location.

“It’s set in New York, in Jamaica Bay,” HBO’s Head of Drama Series and Film Francesca Orsi told Deadline last year. “Issa has a lot to say, not unlike she did with Night Country. It’s a different milieu but just as powerful.”
