Protests at ports across Europe have targeted the cruise industry in recent years over environmental and overtourism concerns, raising the question of whether the sector has been unfairly cast as the emblem of the travel industry’s problems and whether it can restore its reputation. In an episode of The Big Question from Euronews Business, Gianni Onorato, chief executive of MSC Cruises, spoke with Hannah Brown about how the industry is answering its loudest critics as it seeks to secure its future.
Onorato maintained that although cruise vessels are large, the industry itself is not, accounting for under 2 percent of travel packages sold worldwide in 2025. He also noted that in Barcelona, where overtourism complaints have been directed at cruises, passengers represent roughly 3 percent of the city’s daily visitors. Even so, cruise operators are working, as other parts of the travel sector are, to introduce new destinations and distribute tourist arrivals more evenly across the year.
According to Onorato, cruise itineraries are fixed two years in advance, unlike airline schedules, which are confirmed less than a year ahead, giving destinations more time to prepare for arriving visitors. He said that predictability lets small family businesses decide whether to add tables and seats in their restaurants or bars because they can be certain the visitors will come. The industry has also become a significant part of the European economy, supporting more than 445,000 permanent jobs across the continent.
Carbon emissions remain another focus of criticism. The most notable step toward cleaning up the sector is the introduction of dual-fuel engines that can switch between conventional marine fuel and cleaner alternatives. Onorato recalled that in 2023 the MSC Euribia completed a four-day voyage from Le Havre to Copenhagen using biofuel and that, combined with other measures to cut fuel consumption, the ship reached a zero target.
Members of the Cruise Lines International Association operate 327 ships, representing about 90 percent of global cruise capacity. Only 30 of those vessels, roughly one in 11, have dual-fuel engines, up from a single ship in 2018. Progress is slow in part because affordable cleaner fuels are scarce and in part because companies must wait until the end of a ship’s 30-year lifespan to upgrade their fleets. Onorato expressed confidence that most remaining ships in service will have been decommissioned and replaced in time to meet the European Union’s goal of a climate-neutral maritime industry by 2050.
He also highlighted other technologies being retrofitted to the current fleet to sharply lower onboard energy use. He said air conditioning on ships now uses an HVAC inverter that automatically adjusts cooling levels according to how many people are in a room.
The industry’s customer base is shifting as well. Onorato said cruises were once perceived as being for older people, while today the demographic is much younger, with an average age of 35 to 54, which he described as positive for the industry’s future. Solo travellers are a growing market for the company, with safety an increasingly important consideration, and multi-generational holidays are also becoming more popular, allowing family members to pursue separate activities while spending time together.
A sudden boom is unlikely. Nearly all of the world’s cruise ships are built in Europe, with the four major shipbuilders based in Italy, France, Germany and Finland, but production is limited, so demand is likely to exceed supply. Onorato pointed out that this results in controlled growth, which he framed as beneficial for investors and the industry’s long-term future.
The Big Question is a series from Euronews Business in which industry leaders and experts discuss major topics on the current agenda. The discussion was edited by Arno Aubert.
