Families gathered Saturday, Oct. 10, 2026, at the Ramon V. Quintero Community Center for Metro Health’s 13th Annual Baby Buggy Walk in the Park and Health Expo, a community event aimed at raising awareness about infant mortality, pregnancy loss and infant health.
The free event ran from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 3100 Hiawatha St. and invited families to walk together, share stories and connect with public health resources intended to support healthy pregnancies and help more babies reach their first birthday.
The Health Expo included activities for children and families, health resources and educational booths, immunizations, and prizes and produce bag giveaways while supplies lasted.
Metro Health hosted the event with partners including Catholic Charities Nursing Families, Goodwill San Antonio, San Antonio Lactation Support Center, University Health Baby Bexar and other community organizations.
Organizers pointed to local infant mortality data as part of the reason for the annual event. The average infant mortality rate in Bexar County from 2021 to 2025 was 6.5 per 1,000 live births, higher than the national rate of 5.3 and the state rate of 5.8.
The event also aligned with October awareness efforts focused on sleep-related infant deaths, including Sudden Unexpected Infant Death, or SUID/SIDS, described as the third leading cause of infant mortality nationally, statewide and in Bexar County. October is also Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month.
Metro Health said the event honors those who have experienced pregnancy or infant loss and centers hope, support and wellness for individuals and families across the San Antonio community.
