Mentor Public Library is hosting a pair of author talks with two local historians who have spent years investigating true-crime stories from Ohio’s history.
First, Wendy Koile will share stories from her latest book — “Love, Lies and Murder in Northern Ohio” — during a free program at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 2, at the library’s Main Branch, 8215 Mentor Ave., according to a news release.
Koile’s book uncovers:
• The Phantom-Flapper Killer from Canton who shot her lover in cold blood
• Max Amerman of Medina who was willing to kill for the girl of his dreams
• Cleveland’s Matilda Waldman who thought her husband was cursed by a witch… and tried to solve the problem with a pistol.
Koile has written several other books about local true crimes including, “Lake Erie Murder & Mayhem” and “Disasters of Ohio’s Lake Erie Islands.” Her books will be available for sale and signing after her talk, the release stated.
Then, author Jim Sweeney will discuss his new book — “Cleveland’s Naughty Parts: Vice, Scandal and Bad Behavior” — during a free talk at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 3, also at the library’s Main Branch.
His book collects 45 true and lurid tales from Cleveland’s past, featuring celebrity arrests, crooked politicians, speakeasies, a fake heiress, a burning river of whiskey, and much more, the release stated.
Sweeney has also written “What’s the Deal with Dead Man’s Curve? And Other Really Good Questions about Cleveland.” Before that, he was a reporter for The News-Herald and Plain Dealer. Copies of his book will be available for purchase and signing after his talk.
Both author talks are free to attend and open to all, but due to limited space, registration is required. People can sign up for either or both programs at mentorpl.org or call the Mentor library’s Main Branch at 440-255-8811 ext. 1.
