MARSHALL COUNTY, W.Va. — Fifth-grade girls from Marshall County Schools spent Tuesday getting hands-on with science, technology, engineering and math during a STEM day designed to spark interest before they reach middle and high school.
Students rotated through a series of activity stations, including a pumpkin drop, VEX robotics and drones.
Organizers said the event began five years ago as a push for International Day of the Girl, highlighting the need for women in STEM.
“We just want to get them excited about the field, see what they can do as they get ready to go to middle school and high school, what is offered, and hopefully ignite that excitement and become interested in science,” said Heather McCord, coordinator of Marshall County Schools CTE.
The event is expected to be held again around this time next year.
