Campaign finance reports filed Monday show the candidates for governor raised millions of dollars since mid-July.

Republican Zach Lahn raised $16.9 million during the 90 day period, about half a million more than Democrat Rob Sand. About 70% of Lahn’s money came from the Republican Governors Association’s PAC. He had about $400,000 left in his campaign account last week, compared to Democrat Rob Sand’s over $5 million balance for the final weeks of the campaign.

Sand had nearly 89,000 individual donations and his family donated $1.25 million. Lahn’s report shows he had about 5000 donors and about $2.5 million in outstanding loans.

Sand has withdrawn from tomorrow night’s debate with Lahn following the death of his 42-year-old brother-in-law. Walter Lauridsen died last Thursday on a southern Iowa highway after being struck by a vehicle. The family plans to have a private Celebration of Life event this Friday. Lahn said in a written statement that “some things are bigger than politics: and he supports Sand’s decision to withdraw from this week’s debate. Both campaigns have indicated they’re talking about rescheduling the debate on Iowa PBS. The candidates have debated twice before and a debate is already on their schedules for next Tuesday night, on KCRG in Cedar Rapids.
