India Loves Cheap Scooters. So Naturally Italjet Is Bringing Its Expensive Ones

Because apparently, riding a scooter isn’t enough. You need everyone else to know you’re richer than them, too.

There’s something absurd about riding an The Italians. Scooters are supposed to be cheap, practical, fuel-efficient machines that get you from point A to point B without making a fuss. Italjet apparently missed that memo, because its scooters look like someone crossed a Ducati with a Transformer and decided that grocery storage was for peasants.

And now, of all places, the Italian manufacturer is bringing its ridiculous machines to India.

If you’re unfamiliar with India’s two-wheeled landscape, scooters are absolutely everywhere. Millions of people rely on affordable machines like the Honda Activa and TVS Jupiter to commute, run errands, and generally keep their lives moving. They’re inexpensive to buy, cheap to maintain, and perfectly suited to navigating crowded cities. So naturally, Italjet has decided that what this market really needs is a scooter that costs a small fortune and looks like it escaped from a motorcycle racing paddock.

Because Why The Heck Not?

According to Coach IndiaItaljet is entering the Indian market through Motohaus, the distributor responsible for bringing brands like Brixton and VLF into the country. The partnership will introduce the Italian marque to a market that’s already obsessed with scooters, although probably not the kind Italjet specializes in. Specific models, pricing, and launch details are expected to be announced at EICMA 2026 in November.

And that’s where things get interesting. Italjet’s Dragster lineup is essentially what happens when engineers are given a scooter and told to make it as unnecessarily complicated and visually outrageous as possible. There’s an exposed trellis frame, unconventional front suspension, aggressive bodywork, and precious little concern for blending into traffic. It’s a machine designed to attract attention, which makes the prospect of seeing one surrounded by hundreds of ordinary commuter scooters particularly entertaining.

Of course, India isn’t exclusively a market for cheap transportation. There’s a growing appetite for premium motorcycles and lifestyle-oriented two-wheelers, and plenty of enthusiasts are willing to spend serious money on something distinctive. But that’s precisely why Italjet makes sense as a niche offering. Nobody needs a Dragster to get to work. You buy one because you want something unusual, and because the thought of owning an absurdly expensive scooter somehow appeals to you.

Think of it as wearing a Patek Philippe to tell the time. A basic watch accomplishes exactly the same job, but that’s obviously not the point. Riding an Italjet through Indian traffic is the two-wheeled equivalent of announcing, “Look at my scooter, you plebs,” without actually saying anything. It’s extravagant, wildly impractical compared to the alternatives, and completely unnecessary. Which, come to think of it, is exactly why some people will want one.

Whether Italjet can turn that exclusivity into meaningful sales remains to be seen. Pricing will be especially interesting, considering how fiercely competitive India’s scooter market is. But Italjet doesn’t need to outsell Honda or TVS to make a statement. Sometimes, being the most ridiculous scooter at the traffic light is the entire point.
