Petrol Diesel Export Duty: The government has changed the windfall tax on export of petrol and diesel. As per the decision taken yesterday i.e. late Thursday night, the tax on export of petrol has been increased to ₹ 2.50 per liter. At the same time, the duty on export of diesel has been reduced from ₹ 16 to ₹ 8.50 per liter. The new rates have come into effect from October 16. After this decision, there is a question in the minds of people whether the prices of petrol and diesel (Petrol Diesel Price Today) will also increase in the country or can diesel become cheaper? Let us know what effect the change in Windfall Tax on Petrol and Diesel Exports is going to have on you.
Tax increased on export of petrol
According to the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), the windfall tax on petrol exports has been increased from ₹0.50 per liter to ₹2.50 per litre. This will increase the tax burden on the export of petrol. On the other hand, the tax on export of diesel has been reduced by ₹ 7.50 per liter. Earlier this duty was ₹ 16 per liter, which has now been reduced to ₹ 8.50 per liter. There has been no change in the duty on export of Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) or jet fuel.
Will petrol and diesel become expensive in the country?
Change in export duty on petrol and diesel does not mean that the prices of petrol and diesel will increase. The government has clarified that there has been no change in the existing duty on petrol and diesel sold for domestic use. This is the reason why the rates of petrol and diesel remained stable in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and other cities on Friday morning. Whether there will be a change in the prices of petrol and diesel in the coming days or not, it will depend on the decisions of the oil companies.

Windfall tax rate changes every 15 days
Windfall tax rates are reviewed every 15 days. Considering the fluctuations in the prices of crude oil and petroleum products in the international market, the government makes changes in them. This tax was imposed for the first time on the export of fuel in July 2022. It was removed after about two years, but after the sharp rise in crude oil prices in March 2026, the government re-implemented it.
Effect of rise in crude oil prices
The price of crude oil in the international market has reached around $95 per barrel. In the Reuters report, quoting LSEG’s data related to shipping and oil prices, it was told that due to the US-Iran and Russia-Ukraine wars, the cost of freight and insurance has increased. In such an environment, the latest decision of the government is related to the change in the tax on export of petrol and diesel. At present, it is a matter of relief for domestic customers that despite these changes, the retail prices of petrol and diesel have not changed on Friday.
