Germany’s domestic intelligence agency has warned of growing influence by Islamist and other extremist groups within parts of the country’s pro-Palestinian movement.
According to the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, several organizations are exploiting mobilization over the war in Gaza to reach new audiences, spread propaganda and strengthen their networks.
Authorities have also observed occasional cooperation between groups from different ideological backgrounds, brought together by a shared rejection of Israel despite their wider political differences.
Security services have expressed concern over antisemitic content circulating on social media and rhetoric at some demonstrations that glorifies or seeks to legitimize violence.
Since the October 7, 2023, attacks, Germany has intensified its monitoring of organizations suspected of supporting Hamas or other banned movements. German authorities have banned Hamas activities in the country and taken action against groups accused of promoting its ideology.
Officials stressed, however, that demonstrations supporting Palestinians are not inherently extremist. They distinguish lawful political activism from the activities of organizations under surveillance for suspected links to radical groups or ideological support for them.
