ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico voters told KOB 4 inflation, border policy and crime top their concerns as the gubernatorial debate approaches.
Ahead of the debate, KOB 4 asked voters how they want candidates to address the issues at the top of voters’ minds.
KOB 4’s most recent SurveyUSA poll shows inflation is the top issue for a third of New Mexico voters.
For Adam in Rio Rancho, housing costs stand out. “The crazy rent prices, rent increases these past, probably half decade or decade or so it’s just out of control,” Adam said.
Jamie from Las Lunas said she wants the next governor to focus on jobs and business growth.
“I think a lot of the problems with inflation coming from the US Government, not just…not our state alone… maybe better paying jobs if we can get more people into this, more companies into this state,” Jamie said.
Immigration and border security ranked as another top issue for voters in the poll.
Nessa from South Valley said she wants to see a governor stand up to the Trump Administration’s border agenda.
“I would like to see not ICE be here,” Nessa said.
Crime followed close behind border concerns at 13 percent in the poll.
Beverly from Cuba said she wants tougher consequences. “Well, the police arrest them, they take them to court, and then they’re out or don’t even get to court and they’re out the next day, how safe is that” Beverly said.
“You see a lot of drunk drivers, and you seem em, oh they’ve had 3 or 4 or 5, 6, you know DUIs or DWI it’s called here I guess, and quit given them so many chances,” Jamie from Las Lunas said.
Nessa said crime also connects to broader needs in the community. “There’s mental health, there’s jobs there’s housing, there’s a lot of things that go into crime that we need services for, and I think that once we have that crime would go down,” Nessa said.
