A few weeks after the Dutchess County sheriff and district attorney deactivated Flock Safety cameras, county legislators want to ensure the license plate readers are not capturing data by visibly covering them pending their removal.
The county Legislature’s Public Safety Committee on Thursday voted 12-0 to approve a resolution calling for the covering up of the 65 Flock cameras across the county. The full 25-member legislature is expected to vote Tuesday on the measure.
“We’re expecting it to pass,” said Legislator Chris Drago, who introduced the measure. It requires the county executive’s approval.
District Attorney Anthony Parisi and Sheriff Kirk Imperati deactivated the cameras on Sept. 25 following demands made by residents at a public forum.
While Flock has pledged to remove the hardware by Oct. 25, according to Drago, the resolution states that covering any that remain installed after that date “will provide clear assurance to the public that the cameras are no longer in operation.”
The cameras would be covered by county personnel with “opaque, non-damaging materials,” the resolution states.
