DuPage County health officials reported their 1st West Nile virus death of 2026.

DuPAGE COUNTY, Ill. — Health officials are reporting the first West Nile virus death of the year in DuPage County.
The health department says the person that died is an adult. No other details were provided.

So far there have been six cases in the county this year.
Last year there were 14, with one death reported.
Infections happen in humans when they are bitten by mosquitoes that picked up the virus by feeding on infected birds.
One in five infected people will develop symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea or rash.
A person died in Chicago last month, officials said.
