A month ago it was El Gallo con Botas, a hospitality business on Felipe Checa Street, that got stuck in the middle of a … works several weeks. At one of its intersections there are still plates on the ground indicating that the task is yet to be completed, but at least the road is passable. Now, also a few meters away in the Old Town, is the De par en Pah cafeteria-restaurant, on Muñoz Torrero street, which has the floor raised with the machines working a few meters away and at the access to this pedestrian street a fence warns that it is better not to go through unless it is essential. In addition to this business, there are three other hospitality businesses, a jewelry store and six neighborhood gates in the raised section alone, about one hundred meters long. María Infante is in charge of De Par en Pah and has no information about the evolution of a work that has forced her to close for two weeks. This week it reopened, but it is not doing too well because there is no paving, there are several unevennesses, machines in the background working with the street completely closed and a fence advises against passing.
Infante complains that the work is taking too long and that they are not receiving information. «They started the work the Friday before Almossassa and I had the entire terrace reserved, so I had to cancel all those reservations. Another argument came just before starting the work when I already had (the terrace) full of breakfasts and they came and told me that I had to remove the candles because they were going to start the work. It caught me at the end of the month just when it was time to pay insurance and payroll for four employees. Now I have reopened, but who is going to come here? Only regular customers. The thing is that opening under these conditions has more expenses than income. From making between 400 and 500 euros in breakfasts every morning I have gone to making 70 euros,” he complains.

According to this hotel owner, the work had a rhythm, but a pipe broke, they are still working and in this period there are already people who have fallen and for that reason she herself has covered a hole with a piece of wood in front of her premises, where there are no longer any workers but the paving is missing. The problem is that no one tells us how long this situation will last.
According to the Consistory’s forecast, this work in Muñoz Torrero will take approximately one month to complete, although they clarify that it is an estimate, not a fixed deadline, because the evolution of the work and even more so in these months when it could rain and the pace of the work could slow down.
Now also Meléndez Valdés
But Muñoz Torrero is not the only place in this pedestrian part of the Old Town where the street is open in a canal, just as happened in Felipe Checa last month. On the parallel street, in Meléndez Valdés, the machines arrived this Thursday and at the access they have put up another fence warning of the works.

The section that was raised this Thursday is about twenty meters long and a dump truck and an excavator were working on it behind a row of fences, leaving a passage for pedestrians one meter wide. Right there there are several neighborhood portals, a copy shop, an English academy and a bookstore. According to the workers, the work is to change a pipe and they hope to finish in one day if there are no complications. Agustín Lozano, from the Tusitala Bookstore, has the excavator and the ground full of rubble just a few meters from his door. “They have neither informed us that there was going to be a work nor have they told us what it consists of or when it ends,” he told this newspaper.
