Since its announcement, I have heard from constituents whose lives have been devastated by serious crime.
Their experiences are deeply troubling and a reminder that, whatever pressures the justice system faces, victims must never be forgotten.
We know our prisons, courts and police services are under enormous strain.
Overcrowding, court backlogs and stretched police resources all point to a system in need of urgent reform.
But fixing these problems cannot come at the expense of public safety or confidence in justice.
As the Government has gone ahead with the scheme, the Liberal Democrats have pressed for the strongest possible safeguards and for the closing of loopholes that could have allowed the most dangerous offenders to benefit.
However, I do not underestimate the concern that remains among victims, their families and the wider public.
Confidence in the justice system has been badly damaged and rebuilding it will require more than temporary fixes.
I’ve raised this very point with Ministers in Parliament.
Here in South Somerset, I am also campaigning for the reopening of Yeovil’s custody suite.
At present, officers are required to transport detainees to Bridgwater, taking valuable time that could be better spent on the beat.
Visibility is key to deterring crime, and reopening the suite would keep officers local, strengthen our frontline presence and improve our ability to respond when residents need us most.
The problems facing our justice system will not be solved overnight.
But we cannot allow them to leave victims feeling forgotten, communities feeling less safe or public confidence continuing to decline.
I will continue to scrutinise the Early Release Scheme, challenge the Government where necessary and make sure the concerns of South Somerset residents are heard in Westminster.
If you or your family have been affected by the Early Release Scheme, I would encourage you to get in touch.
You can also support my campaign to reopen Yeovil’s custody suite by signing the petition on my website.
