Ciena Corporation CIEN is strengthening its position in the optical networking market as rising demand for high-capacity connectivity drives investments in digital infrastructure. Its latest deployment with Openreach, a major U.K. telecommunications network provider, highlights an opportunity to capitalize on growing bandwidth requirements across data centers, telecommunications networks and international subsea connections.
Openreach is deploying Ciena’s Waveserver platform, powered by WaveLogic 6 (WL6) 1.6Tb/s coherent technology, as part of its Optical Spectrum Extended Access (OSEA) portfolio. The solution will enable Openreach to offer wholesale customers tailored, high-capacity network services across the U.K., including connectivity for cable landing stations, data centers and core network nodes. The deployment combines 400G and 800G client traffic over dedicated 1.6Tb/s wavelengths, with a compact 2RU chassis supporting up to 32 400G services. It enables Openreach to introduce national 800G services while providing a pathway to even higher speeds as bandwidth requirements increase. These capabilities could strengthen demand for Ciena’s optical networking solutions as network operators seek to transfer larger volumes of data efficiently.
As AI applications increase the need for high-bandwidth connections between data centers and other network endpoints, Ciena’s optical technology can help network operators accommodate rising traffic while scaling capacity to meet evolving requirements. Beyond AI, growing online content consumption, cloud adoption and international subsea traffic provide additional demand drivers. These applications broaden the potential market for Ciena’s solutions and underscore the importance of upgrading optical networks.
Despite favorable industry trends, Ciena faces competition from other optical networking vendors like Corning Incorporated GLW and Nokia NOK, targeting telecommunications operators and data center customers.
CIEN’s Market Position Faces Competitive Pressure
GLW entered the second half of 2026 with its growth outlook tied to AI infrastructure and optical connectivity. Corning is also expanding its GenAI optical portfolio with multicore fiber and high-density connectivity solutions that improve network capacity and reduce installation complexity. It announced a long-term partnership with NVIDIA to expand U.S.-based optical connectivity manufacturing capacity by 10 times and increase domestic fiber production capacity by more than 50%. In September, Corning secured a multi-year, multibillion-dollar Verizon deal to supply more than 80 million miles of optical fiber through 2032, boosting revenue visibility and exposure to broadband and AI infrastructure demand.
