Downtown Milford comes alive Oct. 17 with a car show, Comic Con and fall shopping celebration, followed by the city’s 70th community parade and Halloween festivities.
MILFORD — Classic cars, superheroes, colorful costumes, marching bands and Halloween fun are all part of a busy second half of October in Milford, where community organizations and downtown businesses are joining forces to give residents plenty of reasons to get out and enjoy their hometown.
Saturday, Oct. 17, promises to be an especially active day as the Dolce Car Show, Milford Comic Con and Shop Small Fall Crawl bring entertainment, shopping and family activities to downtown Milford.
Just four days later, one of the city’s most cherished traditions returns when the Milford Community Parade celebrates its 70th year with a comic book theme and a special salute to America’s 250th anniversary.
And the month concludes with a Halloween-themed 5K benefiting the arts, along with the final Saturdays of the Riverwalk Farmers Market.
Downtown Milford Inc. is promoting the October lineup under its familiar message, “Art Town. River Town. Home Town.” The activities are designed not only to entertain residents but also to introduce visitors to Milford’s growing collection of shops, restaurants and attractions.
Cars, trucks and motorcycles take center stage Oct. 17
Car enthusiasts will have an opportunity to see a variety of vehicles when Dolce Bakery & Coffee Shop hosts its car show Saturday, Oct. 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 36 N. Walnut St.
The show welcomes cars, trucks and motorcycles, offering spectators an opportunity to admire vintage automobiles, muscle cars, customized vehicles and other examples of automotive craftsmanship.
Organizers are advertising trophies for the top 10 vehicles, Best of Show and Best Motorcycle, along with commemorative dash plaques for the first 75 registered entries. A 50/50 drawing and door prizes are also planned.
The event brings together automobile owners who take pride in preserving, restoring and showing their vehicles, while giving families an opportunity to see the cars up close.
Spectators can enjoy the displays without purchasing an admission ticket, although vehicle registration carries a separate fee.
The car show will take place in conjunction with several other downtown events, creating an opportunity for visitors to spend much of the day exploring Milford.
Comic Con brings superheroes and family fun to Walnut Street
The same Saturday, Milford Comic Con will bring a different kind of colorful display to downtown.
Scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. along North and South Walnut streets, Comic Con will feature a costume contest, card tournament, vendors, food and games.
Comic book enthusiasts and fans of popular entertainment are encouraged to participate in the fun, with costumes expected to be part of the attraction.
For families, the combination of Comic Con and the car show offers an unusual mix of activities, with comic book characters and automotive displays sharing the downtown spotlight.
The event is free to attend and offers an opportunity for children and adults to enjoy a celebration built around imagination, creativity and entertainment.
Shop Small Fall Crawl encourages visitors to explore downtown
While car enthusiasts and comic book fans are enjoying the festivities, downtown merchants will have their own special invitation for visitors.
The second annual Shop Small Fall Crawl runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 17 at participating downtown Milford businesses.
The event encourages residents to explore local shops, discover merchandise and support independent retailers.
Participating businesses are expected to offer seasonal specials, promotions, giveaways and displays featuring fall merchandise, gifts, clothing and home décor.
There is no ticket required to participate.
The Fall Crawl also provides an opportunity for visitors who may be coming downtown primarily for the car show or Comic Con to discover shops and restaurants they might otherwise overlook.
For downtown businesses, the combination of three events on a single Saturday creates an opportunity to attract customers and introduce new visitors to Milford’s commercial district.
Rather than visiting a single attraction and leaving, families can spend the day moving between activities, shopping and enjoying a meal at a local restaurant.
Milford’s 70th community parade promises a night of superheroes and hometown pride
The excitement continues Wednesday, Oct. 21, when the Milford Community Parade returns for an evening that celebrates generations of community tradition.
This year’s theme, “Comic Books Come to Life,” invites parade participants to bring familiar superheroes, comic book characters and imaginative creations to the streets.
The parade also will include recognition of America’s 250th anniversary, linking Milford’s annual celebration with the nation’s semiquincentennial.
Organizers are marking the parade’s 70th year, a milestone that reflects the event’s enduring place in Milford’s community life.
The parade begins at 6:30 p.m. and follows a 1.7-mile route through the city.
Starting near Milford Middle School, the procession travels along School Street to Seabury Avenue, then turns onto South Walnut Street and continues north before ending at Briggs Stadium near Milford High School.
Spectators can expect a procession featuring community organizations, decorated floats, marching bands and other participants representing the Milford area.
The event is free, and organizers recommend that families arrive early and bring lawn chairs to find a comfortable viewing location.
Three designated reviewing areas along the route are planned, with announcers, restrooms and food vendors.
A tradition spanning generations
The Milford Community Parade has roots in a Halloween celebration started under former Mayor Ed Evans.
Over the years, the parade evolved from a seasonal event into a broader community tradition that brings together local schools, organizations, businesses and generations of Milford residents.
The Gray family has played an important role in sustaining the event in recent decades, while Milford Community Parades Inc., a nonprofit organization, oversees its operation with the assistance of volunteers and community sponsors.
Although Downtown Milford Inc. includes the parade in its October promotions, the parade is organized independently by Milford Community Parades Inc.
For many Milford families, the parade is as much about tradition as entertainment. It offers an opportunity for former residents to return, neighbors to reconnect and children to experience an event that their parents and grandparents may have enjoyed.
The comic book theme should provide plenty of opportunities for creative entries, while the anniversary celebration adds historical significance to this year’s procession.
Additional information about the parade, participation and sponsorship opportunities is available at www.milfordparade.com.
Farmers market offers three more Saturdays of shopping
The Riverwalk Farmers Market continues on Saturdays through Oct. 31, offering residents a chance to purchase locally grown produce, specialty foods and handmade products.
Operated as part of Downtown Milford Inc.’s revitalization efforts, the market brings farmers, food producers and craft vendors into the downtown district.
The market is scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon at Riverwalk Park near South Walnut Street, with remaining dates Oct. 17, 24 and 31.
Organizers say the market attracts an average of approximately 600 shoppers weekly, providing regular activity for downtown businesses and an outlet for Delaware agricultural producers.
Halloween Run for the Arts closes the month
Milford’s October festivities will wrap up Saturday, Oct. 31, with the ninth annual Run for the Arts 5K and 1-mile fun walk, benefiting the Mispillion Art League.
The event begins at 9 a.m. at Bicentennial Park, near Arena’s and Surf Bagel, and takes participants through scenic portions of Milford, including the Mispillion Riverwalk Trail and Goat Island.
With the race falling on Halloween, participants are encouraged to wear costumes, adding a festive element to the fundraiser.
The event is organized by the Mispillion Art League and Seashore Striders.
Proceeds support the art league’s programs, which include classes, exhibitions, a public gallery and opportunities for local artists.
Registration is available at RunSignup, with advance registration encouraged.
More than entertainment: Downtown events support Milford businesses
Together, the activities demonstrate how Milford’s downtown organizations, merchants and volunteers use community events to bring people into the city.
Downtown Milford Inc. has worked to promote Milford as a destination for shopping, dining, arts and recreation while supporting the businesses that give the downtown district its character.
The October calendar reflects that approach by combining small-business promotions with special events that appeal to different audiences.
The car show attracts automobile enthusiasts. Comic Con appeals to families and pop culture fans. The Fall Crawl encourages shopping at locally owned businesses. And the Milford Community Parade brings generations of residents together for a shared hometown tradition.
With several activities concentrated along Walnut Street and the Riverwalk, visitors can experience much of what downtown Milford offers within a relatively small area.
Whether someone comes to admire a classic automobile, dress as a superhero, watch a parade or simply enjoy a Saturday afternoon with family, the remaining weeks of October offer plenty of reasons to spend time in Milford.
