BlackBerry Limited BB QNX business is emerging as a potentially key growth driver as AI reshapes the automotive industry, industrial automation and robotics. Known for its real-time operating systems and safety-critical software, QNX is well-positioned to benefit from a broader shift toward software-defined vehicles, intelligent machines and autonomous systems. While AI and Physical AI offer promising opportunities, the pace of commercialization, competition and customer adoption will determine how much value QNX can ultimately unlock.
QNX’s growth strategy rests on three pillars: its core automotive business, moving up the software stack with Alloy Kore and expanding into adjacent embedded markets. Core automotive remains the primary growth driver, supported by the shift toward software-defined vehicles and centralized computing architectures. QNX’s addressable market could more than double over the next five years as high-performance centralized computing architectures expand from roughly one-third to three-quarters of annual global vehicle production. Growth will also come from higher software content per vehicle, multiple QNX deployments and the transition to its SDP 8 platform.
As existing design wins enter production, royalty revenue should increase. QNX is also securing minimum volume commitments to improve revenue visibility and cash flow, while China’s new safety requirements for assisted and automated driving systems create additional opportunities. QNX’s general embedded markets account for about 20% of revenue and offer long-term growth opportunities across physical AI, robotics, industrial automation, medical devices and aerospace and defense. Its real-time, safety-certified and reliable software is increasingly important as AI moves into physical systems, including robotaxis, humanoid robots, surgical robots, autonomous vehicles and drones. While many markets remain in the early stages, a growing customer pipeline and rising demand for safety-critical software could dramatically expand QNX’s addressable market.
The company raised its fiscal 2027 QNX revenue outlook to $315-$325 million and adjusted EBITDA guidance to $95-$105 million. For the third quarter, QNX revenue is expected to be between $82 million and $88 million, with adjusted EBITDA of $27-$32 million. Management cited strong core automotive momentum and conversion of the royalty backlog into production revenue.
Can Competition Hinder BB’s QNX From Reaching Its Potential?
NVIDIA Corporation NVDA continues to build a longer-duration opportunity in automotive, robotics and other physical AI applications. NVIDIA expanded its DRIVE Hyperion robotaxi-ready ecosystem through collaborations with Foxconn, VinFast, Uber and HUMAIN and introduced Alpamayo 2 Super for autonomous vehicle development. It also launched Cosmos 3, an open frontier model for physical AI, the Isaac GR00T reference humanoid robot and Halos for Robotics safety software. Management has positioned physical AI as one of the workloads supported by the same computing, model and software stack, which can extend platform adoption beyond Data Center deployments. In August, it unveiled NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano 2, a new robotics computer for entry-level edge AI.
