ALLERTON, The Bronx (WABC) — Two women are dead and another was critically injured after they were struck by a car that went through an intersection in the Bronx.
It happened near Allerton and Holland avenues just after 2 p.m. Friday.
Police say the 81-year-old driver of a Mercedes was unable to stop as he drove through the intersection. Surveillance video shows the car starting off slow and then speeding through, plowing into the woman at the crosswalk,
The car then smashed into four other vehicles in a chain-reaction collision.
“I saw everybody get hit by a car, multiple people get hit by a car, and it was horrific,” said one eyewitness.
Police say the man rear-ended two vehicles and then crashed into two additional vehicles.
All occupants of the vehicles involved remained on the scene and were taken to the hospital in stable condition. The 81-year-old driver is conscious and alert with minor injuries.
Nearby businesses had their front windows blown out by the impact. One man who worked nearby said it was “traumatizing” knowing that some of the badly injured victims would not survive.
“Everybody was screaming, the past 35 years I been in the avenue, I never seen like that,” he said.
No arrests have been made.
The identity of the women who died have not been released, but they were both in their fifties.
