The officer-in-charge of Narayanganj’s Fatullah Model Police Station was injured when a brick thrown by angry locals at a man, who is an accused of raping a 10-year-old girl, mistakenly hit him during his arrest last night.
The incident took place around 10:00pm in Chandni Housing, a residential area in Panchabati, police said.
Police arrested the accused, Jakir Hossain, 55, of Gaba village in Banaripara upazila of Barishal. He lives with his family in the Chandni Housing area, police said.
Mohammad Mahbub Alam, officer-in-charge of Fatullah Model Police Station, said Jakir allegedly raped a child living in a neighbouring flat around 8:00pm.
The girl’s mother works at a garment factory while her father sells fish. They were not at home when the incident allegedly took place.
As news of the incident spread, locals confined the accused to the area. When police arrived, the crowd became agitated, the OC said.
“While we were taking the accused away after arresting him, angry locals threw bricks at him. One of the bricks hit my head, injuring me,” Mahbub Alam said.
The OC later received primary treatment at Narayanganj 300-bed Hospital.
The girl’s mother filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act later that night, naming Jakir as the accused, the OC said.
Jakir was shown arrested in the case and sent to court this morning, he added.
