China has requested the dispute settlement body of the World Trade Organization (WTO) to set up a panel in the case filed against India for help in solar cell, module and information technology sectors.
The request comes after the failure of bilateral consultations to reach a mutually agreed solution to the dispute filed by China in December last year. The matter was consulted on February 10, 2026 to reach a mutually agreed solution.
“Unfortunately, those consultations did not resolve the dispute. Therefore, China has requested the formation of a panel,” the World Trade Organization (WTO) said in a press release.
China has alleged that measures such as tariffs or import duties imposed by India on certain technology products, and the use of domestic products in place of imported goods, discriminate against Chinese goods.
Beijing had claimed that these support measures and incentives violate rules related to the World Trade Organization (WTO) General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade 1994, the Agreement on Subsidies and Compensatory Measures and the Agreement on Trade-Related Investment Measures.
According to World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, the first stage of the dispute settlement process is consultation.
If consultations with India do not yield a satisfactory solution, China may request WTO to set up a panel to adjudicate on the issue raised. China is India’s second largest trading partner.
