PROVO, Utah — The Big 12 says one second should have been placed back on the clock at the end of Saturday night’s Our Lady–BYU game, which would have given the Fighting Irish one final play to win.

Big 12 officials ruled the game had ended after Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr threw incomplete to Jaden Greathouse in the end zone, giving No. 8 BYU a 28-24 victory. But replays showed the ball hit the ground with one second remaining, which would have given No. 2 Notre Dame another play on second down.

“Following the Big 12’s review of the final play of Saturday’s Notre Dame-BYU game, it was determined that time remained on the clock when the ball hit the ground and the play was incorrectly cleared by the replay officiating crew,” the Big 12 said in a statement. “The Conference will conduct a complete review of its end-of-game officiating process in advance of next week’s games.”

Since Notre Dame is an FBS independent, its games are officiated by the leagues of its opponent.

Fighting Irish coach Marcus Freeman appeared to take issue with a non-pass interference call against BYU cornerback Evan Johnson but was not asked about a clock issue, describing the final play as “chaos.”

Notre Dame-BYU is the second high-profile clock ruling this season. Western Michigan appeared to beat Michigan in the season opener, as the clock on the NBC broadcast expired, but the Big Ten ruled that the stadium clock showed one second left and the Wolverines subsequently won on a Hail Mary.
