Three people have been killed and more than 30 others injured in attacks on two airports in Saudi Arabia. Anti-government Houthi rebels in Yemen have claimed responsibility for the attacks.
Saudi aviation authorities say the airports in the capital, Riyadh, and the southwestern city of Abha were targeted on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Officials say one person was killed and eight injured in Riyadh, while two people were killed and 28 injured in Abha.
A spokesperson for the Houthis said on Wednesday that they conducted ballistic missile and drone attacks on the airports.
In Yemen, tensions between the Houthis and the Saudi-backed interim government have flared up again due to the effects of the situation in Iran.
Meanwhile, multiple US media outlets have reported that US President Donald Trump is considering resuming attacks on Iran ahead of next month’s midterm elections.
The Atlantic magazine on Wednesday quoted administration officials as saying that the White House had asked the Department of Defense “to develop strike options against Iranian targets that could be exercised ahead of the midterms.”
The magazine also said, “The size and targets of the potential strikes — and whether the administration will ultimately proceed — are still being debated.” It cited a US official as saying that the plans are being developed by US Central Command.
The Atlantic said those in favor of the plans “believe that further action after months of uneasy peace could allow Trump to demonstrate strength and potentially declare some sort of victory, giving Republicans much-needed momentum heading into the election.”
US news website Axios also reported on Wednesday that officials said the Pentagon had instructed US Central Command several days earlier “to conclude preparations for resuming major combat operations in Iran.”
Axios cited US and Israeli sources as saying the operations could happen before the Israeli election on October 27 and the US midterm elections.
