Air Force travels to Commander-in-Chief’s Cup, Oct. 13-14

THIS WEEK: The Air Force golf team goes head-to-head with Army and Navy in the fourth annual Commander-in-Chief’s Cup, Tuesday-Wednesday, Oct. 13-14, at historic Oakmont Golf Country Club in Oakmont, Pa.

THE FORMAT: Golfers will play 36 holes on Tuesday, Oct. 13, and the final 18 holes on Wednesday, Oct. 14. Unlike most collegiate tournaments, each team will have eight golfers compete with the top six counting toward the team score.

ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: In the first year of the CIC Cup in 2023, Army and Navy tied with 1360 (with Army winning a playoff) at the Robert Trent Jones Club in Gainesville, Va. Air Force was third at 1373. Isaac Layne was the top Falcon, tying for second at 223 (70-76-77). In 2024, the tournament was moved to the Scottsdale (Ariz.) Country Club and shortened to 36 holes due to weather. Army won with an 850, followed by Navy (863) and Air Force (875). That is, Huntington was the top Falcon, placing fifth overall, with a 144 (even – 74-70).

LAST YEAR AT THE CIC CUP: Senior Eric Liveringhouse led the Air Force golf team on the final day of the third annual Commander-in-Chief’s Cup, Oct. 1, at Winged Foot Golf Course in Mamaroneck, N.Y.  Liveringhouse shot a 73 (+3) in the final round. Junior Carson Baker was the top Falcon, placing third overall with a 228 (+18). Navy won the tournament with a 54-hole score of 1388 (+128). Army was second (1406) and Air Force was third (1411). Eight players from each team played with the top six scores counting toward the team score.

ABOUT OAKMONT: The Oakmont Country Club is a par-70, playing at 7,427 yards. Over the last century-plus, Oakmont has hosted 18 USGA Championships. The U.S. Open Championship has been contested there a record ten times. The U.S. Amateur Championships was the first USGA event at the Club in 1919 and has been played there six times overall. In 1992, the Club hosted its first of two U.S. Women’s Open Championships. Of the 18 champions, eight have been enshrined in the World Golf Hall of Fame. The U.S. Open will return in 2033. The U.S. Women’s Open returns to Oakmont in 2028. In 2032, the Club will host its first Walker Cup Matches.

THE FALCON LINEUP: 1- That is, Huntington; 2-Grant Samuelson; 3-Carson Baker; 4-Ben Zeiler; 5-Jack Halloran; 6-Daniel Chazen; 7-Grant Baer; 8-Karson Knox.

LAST WEEK: Senior team captain That is, Huntington led the Air Force golf team at the Mark Simpson Invitational, Sept. 30, at the Boulder Country Club in Boulder, Colo. Huntington finished the tournament tied for 32nd at 212 (+2). Freshman Jack Halloranplaying in his first collegiate tournament as a member of the team, shot 73 (+3) in the final round and finished the tournament at 213 (+3). Sophomore Ben Zeiler shot a 73 (+3) in the final round and finished the tournament at 218 (+8).  Senior Carson Baker shot a 219 and senior Grant Samuelson finished at 223. Arkansas State won the tournament with an 813. Long Beach State was second (820) and Colorado was third (825). Air Force finished 14th at 858 (+18).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Freshman Jack Halloranwho has played six of the nine rounds this season, leads the team with a 71.00 season stroke average. Halloran has three of his six rounds in the 60’s, with a career-best 67 (-3) at the Mark Simpson-CU Invitational. The 67 is the best by a Falcon this season. Senior That is, Huntington is second on the team with a 73.22 season stroke average. His four-under 68 (-4) is his season best at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational. Sophomore Ben Zeiler has a 73.33 season stroke average, followed by senior Carson Baker (74.11) and senior Grant Samuelson (74.44).

UP NEXT: Following the CIC Cup, Air Force will compete in the UTSA Military City Collegiate, at TPC San Antonio in San Antonio, Texas.
