Just a day before Independence Day, a big announcement has been made by India Post. Under this, a big step has been taken in the direction of Insurance for All. Under this, the Indian Postal Department has made a major change in the rules of Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI). This change is regarding the eligibility of RPLI, which states that not only people living permanently in rural areas, but anyone having an active savings account in any scheduled bank or India Post (POSB) can avail the benefit of this insurance scheme. The Postal Department has directed to implement this rule with immediate effect.
The Department of Posts has said that with immediate effect, having a current savings bank account with POSB or any scheduled bank will be an additional eligibility condition for Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI). With this, the traditional condition of living in rural areas has ended and now cheap life insurance guaranteed by the government will reach more families.
Eligibility rules changed in Rural Postal Life Insurance
This change means that taking Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI) has now become even easier. Now the old condition of living in a rural area is no longer necessary to take insurance. If you have a current savings account with India Post (POSB) or any other Scheduled Bank, you are eligible for this. Earlier, only permanent residents of rural areas were eligible under this scheme.
Now under the new rule, a person having an active/operative savings account in any scheduled bank or post office can now take Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI).
It also says that if there is digital proof, no separate physical bank certificate is required. That means digital proofs like passbook, mobile banking screenshot, email statement or ATM mini-statement will be valid.
What is RPLI?
Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI) is a secure life insurance scheme of the Government of India. It was started on 24 March 1995. Its main goal is to provide insurance protection to village people, farmers and women at low cost. Under this scheme, insurance ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 10 lakh can be done. There is a loan facility on this after 4 years, whereas after 3 years it can be closed. However, if you surrender before completion of 5 years, you will not get the bonus.
