A 6.5-mile stretch of streets connecting Echo Park, downtown Los Angeles, Chinatown, Little Tokyo, the Arts District and Boyle Heights will be closed to motor vehicles Sunday for CicLAvia’s 68th open-streets event.
CicLAvia — Heart of LA will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, allowing participants to walk, jog, bike, skate or use other forms of people-powered transportation along the route, according to organizers. The event is free and open to people of all ages and abilities.
A kickoff news conference is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Sunday at the Echo Park Hub, with Los Angeles Department of Transportation General Manager Laura Rubio-Cornejo, Councilman Hugo Soto-Martinez, CicLAvia Executive Director Romel Pascual and CicLAvia board chair Israel Rojas among those scheduled to attend.
The event marks CicLAvia’s 16th anniversary.
Four hubs will be located along the route in Echo Park, Chinatown, Little Tokyo and at Mariachi Plaza. The hubs will serve as walking zones and offer activities, restrooms, water-refilling stations, basic bicycle repair, bicycle parking, first aid and free pedicab rides, organizers said.
The Echo Park Hub will be on Bellevue Avenue near Glendale Boulevard on the south side of Echo Park Lake. The Chinatown Hub will be on North Broadway north of College Street, the Little Tokyo Hub on South Central Avenue south of First Street and the Mariachi Plaza Hub on First Street east of South Boyle Avenue.
CicLAvia is a nonprofit organization that temporarily closes streets to motor vehicles to create public spaces for walking, bicycling, skating and other forms of people-powered transportation.
Organizers said nearly 2 million people have participated in CicLAvia events that have covered more than 380 miles of streets since the program began.
