Well, we have reached what feels like rock bottom. At roughly 6:45 p.m. on Sept. 26, it looked like the Michigan Wolverines were about to improve to 4-0 with their second ranked win of the season and the offense hitting its stride.
About a week later, Michigan fell to 3-2 with a horrific loss to a Minnesota team that just simply isn’t good. The season is over.
Michigan is not going to win the Big Ten and it is not going to the College Football Playoff. Those are always the goals, and just five games into the season, those are out the window. I don’t remember the last time I felt a lower level of confidence about the future of the program, but it was sometime in the Brady Hoke days. Things are bleak around Ann Arbor, but the good news is the Wolverines aren’t going to lose this weekend. A much-needed bye week is here, and Michigan has a lot of work to do if this season is going to salvaged even a little bit.
With the bye week here, it’s time to take a deeper look at the rest of the season and make a few bold predictions for what’s to come.
Michigan will not make a bowl game
I’m not sure if this is even a hot take at this point, but Michigan very well could miss a bowl game. Personally, there is one game left I am confident Michigan can win, and that’s the Rutgers game. The Wolverines also play Penn State, Indiana, Michigan State, Oregon, UCLA and Ohio State. Four of those teams are ranked. Playing like they did against Minnesota, the Wolverines probably beat Michigan State just because of the defense, but that might be it.
Tommy Carr will be become Michigan’s QB
It looked like Bryce Underwood was starting to find his groove during the Iowa game, but that was obviously not the case against Minnesota. Underwood and the Wolverines were only able to find the end zone once, and it was with a short field after an interception. The offense was a complete disaster, and Underwood is certainly part of the blame. He had Andrew Marsh wide open down the sideline for a touchdown and instead threw it to Buchanan in double coverage for a pick. He also had a tight end wide open on the 4th-and-5 that ended the game.
Those are only a couple of the examples from one single game. This can’t last all season, and if it continues, freshman Tommy Carr will need to get a chance.
Kyle Whittingham will be gone after this season
I don’t think head coach Kyle Whittingham is going to be fired after this season, but I think he will actually move on himself. My main concern about this hire was the fact Whittingham was basically retired during the end of his Utah career. He was going back and forth, and it was clear he wasn’t in it like he used to be. Now, he is calling this the biggest challenge of his career. It’s simple: Whittingham just isn’t built for this, and I think he’s going to realize that pretty soon if he hasn’t already.
