A murder case accused fled from the dock of a Dhaka court today, police said.
Shariful Islam, 30, escaped after Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jamshed Alam held a hearing in a case accusing him of resisting lawful arrest.
“Shariful loosened the handcuffs in the dock and fled from the scene around 12:30pm,” Mohiuddin Mahmud Sohel, deputy commissioner of the Prosecution Division at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), told The Daily Star.
Shariful, a resident of Horipur in Dinajpur’s Nawabganj upazila, had earlier escaped from police custody on June 19 last year from the premises of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court.
Police said he was being taken to the court lockup after a hearing at Dhaka’s Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court-3 in a case over the 2018 abduction and murder of a 14-year-old schoolboy from Khilgaon.
During the transfer, Shariful allegedly struck Constable Shahidullah and escaped. Police said he had used a metallic object to loosen and remove his handcuffs before fleeing.
Following that escape, police filed a case against him with Kotwali Police Station the same day.
More than four months later, Shariful was arrested in connection with this case, in which he was accused of resisting arrest.
The hearing today was being held over his earlier escape.
