October is National Crime Prevention Month, a time to recognize that campus safety is a shared responsibility.
While The University of Alabama Police Department works around the clock to protect our campus community, safety is strongest when students, faculty and staff work together to prevent problems before they occur. National Crime Prevention Month encourages individuals to stay aware, report concerns and take simple actions that help keep everyone safe.
One of the most effective tools in crime prevention is awareness. Most days on campus are routine and uneventful, but paying attention to your surroundings can help identify situations that may need attention.
Whether it’s suspicious behavior, a door that won’t properly secure, property that appears to be abandoned or a friend who may be in distress, noticing something out of the ordinary is often the first step in preventing larger problems.
If you see something that concerns you, say something.
Don’t assume someone else has already reported it. Contact UAPD or the appropriate university office and share what you’ve observed. Information that may seem minor could provide an important piece of a larger picture. Reporting concerns allows first responders and university officials to determine whether follow-up is needed.
To report suspicious behavior, crimes or emergencies, call UAPD at 205-348-5454.
Report a student who may be in distress or who is exhibiting concerning behaviors, fill out the Student of Concern formor contact the Office of Student Care and Well-Being at 205-348-2461.
Anonymously report any student or student organization misconduct, send a text message to 888-708-8433.
For other reporting options, visit the UAct website.
Finally, do something. Crime prevention often comes down to small actions that make a big difference. Here are a few ways you can do your part:
- Lock your vehicle, even if you’ll only be away for a few minutes.
- Secure your residence hall room, office and personal belongings.
- Walk with friends at night whenever possible.
- Check in on classmates, coworkers and colleagues who may need assistance.
- Help create an environment where people feel comfortable asking for help and reporting concerns.
A safe campus does not happen by accident. It is built by thousands of individuals who choose to look out for one another every day.
This National Crime Prevention Month, remember a simple message: See Something. Say Something. Do Something.
By staying aware, speaking up and taking action when needed, each of us plays an important role in making The University of Alabama a safer place to learn, work and live.
